GNMS PTA Purpose

                     Great Neck Middle School PTA
                              Purpose

The purpose of the GNMS PTA is 1) To promote the welfare of children and 
youth in home, school, community, and place of worship 2) To raise the 
standards of home life 3) To secure adequate laws for the care and 
protection of children and youth 4) To develop between educators and the 
general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth 
the highest advantages in physical, mental, social, and spiritual education.

                         Duties of the Officers

President shall preside at all meetings of the association, perform such 
other duties as may be prescribed in the bylaws or assigned by the 
association, be a member ex officio of all committees except the nominating 
committee, and coordinate the work of the officers and committees of the 
association in order that the Purposes may be promoted.

First Vice-President shall act as an aid to the president, perform the 
duties of the president in the absence or inability of that officer to act, 
serve as programs chairman, overseeing Reflections, Scholarships, Volunteers 
in Education, Juvenile Protection and other program committees formed and 
perform other delegated duties as assigned.

Second Vice President shall act as an aide to the president, perform the 
duties of the president in the absence or inability of that officer to act, 
serve as membership chairman, overseeing Ways and Means committee and other 
fund raising committees formed, and perform other delegated duties as 
assigned.

Recording Secretary shall record the minutes of all meetings of the 
association, keep the official copy of the local unit’s bylaws in his/her 
files, maintain a membership list as required by the Virginia PTA/PTSA, and 
perform other delegated duties as assigned.

Corresponding Secretary shall conduct such correspondences as may be 
delegated to him/her by the president, executive board to the organization, 
notify all executive board members of meeting dates, be responsible for the 
communications of the organization, including the PTA newsletter, perform 
recording secretary duties in the absence of that officer and perform other 
delegated duties as assigned.

Treasurer shall have custody of all the funds of the association, keep a 
full and accurate account of receipts and expenditures, Make disbursements 
as authorized by the president, executive board, or association in 
accordance with the budget adopted by the association, remit to the Virginia 
PTA/PTSA state office, state and National PTA dues from memberships, have 
checks or vouchers signed by two officers, preferably the treasurer and the 
president, present a written financial statement at every meeting of the 
association and at other times when requested by the executive board, 
prepare an annual financial report at the close of the fiscal year, have the 
accounts examined according to the auditing procedures, and perform other 
delegated duties as assigned.

Chairmen of Standing Committees

Cut/Copy Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating volunteers 
to assist teachers and staff in performing clerical type work in the 
cut/copy center.

Dance Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating a team of 
volunteers to promote and execute two dances during the school year.

Student Directory Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating 
volunteers in obtaining directory information, compiling the data, printing 
and dispersing the student directory.

Dollars of Scholars Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating 
volunteers to promote and execute one fund raiser, usually held in February, 
for the sole purpose of raising money to fund the Great Neck Middle School 
College Scholarship Fund.

Field Day Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating 
volunteers to promote the eighth grade field day which is an outdoor 
activity featuring competitions and games during the month of June for the 
graduating eighth grade students.
 
Hospitality Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating 
volunteers to promote, procure food and raffle items and execute the teacher 
luncheon at the beginning of the school year.

Juvenile Protection Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating 
and promoting programs such as, but not limited to, baby sitting and CPR 
classes for students at GNMS.

Landscaping Committee Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating efforts 
to improve the overall outward appearance of the Great Neck Middle School 
grounds.

Marquee Committee Chairman shall be responsible for publicizing information 
on the marquee on a weekly, sometimes daily basis.

Newsletter Committee Chairman shall be responsible for compiling, 
formatting, and printing the information submitted for the newsletter at 
least six times during the school year. 

Newsletter Distribution Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating 
volunteers to collate the newsletter and either distribute it by postal mail 
or by e-mail at least six times during the school year.

Parent Visitation Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating the 
activities to publicize, promote, and execute parent visitation one time 
during the school year.

Publicity Chairman shall be responsible for providing school information to 
the Beacon on a monthly basis.

Reflection Chairman shall be responsible for organizing, publicizing, 
executing, and conducting the Reflections Program usually held at the 
beginning of the school year.

Scholarship Selection Chairman shall be responsible for publicizing, 
promoting, reviewing and selecting the recipient of the GNMS Scholarship.
School Store Chairman shall be responsible for organizing volunteers to 
purchase and sale school store items on a daily basis for the duration of 
the school year.

Sixth Grade Orientation Chairman shall be responsible for organizing and 
executing the back to school orientation and information night for incoming 
sixth graders.

Staff Appreciation Chairman shall be responsible for coordinating volunteers 
to recognize the school staff and host special events for the school staff 
during the school year.

Volunteers in Education Chairman shall be responsible for compiling a data 
base of the volunteers, contacting and organizing volunteers to assist the 
PTA and the school in areas of need on an ongoing basis.
Web Page Chairman shall be responsible for maintaining the PTA web page 
during the school year.

Teacher of the Month Chairman shall be responsible for conducting an 
appropriate program to recognize the teachers on an ongoing basis.
