New District Membership Chair: Debbie Selfridge 757-872-9624 dhselfridge@aol.com 305-B Circuit Lane Newport News 23608 Currently all Peninsula District schools have paid their dues! Thanks to the hard work of our Council Presidents, we have 100% into the state office before June 30. This means if a unit's bylaws are in order, they will be able to fully participate in ALL Virginia PTA activities! For 2009-2010, we are striving to have all dues paid ON TIME (December 1, 2010). HOW TO STAY "IN GOOD STANDING" AND NOT WORRY ABOUT THE MISSED MEMBERSHIP DEADLINE OF DECEMBER 1????? Make a point to mail in your dues payments at the end of each month. This way you won't have the bother of remembering to mail that check around the Thanksgiving holidays.... We highly recommend this procedure to all local units....Do it, you will be glad you did. Please don't let an "adult" mistake hurt your students.... Don't forget special OMDR training will be available at the Virginia State Leadership Conference in July, plan to send your Membership Chair to get this valuable training info. Welcome to our newest PTA Board member, Debbie Selfridge. Debbie hails from Newport News and is excited to be working as your Membership Chair this year. Join me in welcoming her to the Distict PTA Board. Her contact info is on the About Us Page. Membership Dues While the PTA collects annual dues, the real working capital of a PTA lies in the membership, not in its treasury. The primary emphasis of PTA is promoting the PTA Mission and Purpose. The challenge being to work with fellow members, school administrators, parents, and teachers to find ways to improve the lives of children, their families and the community. Dues provide the operating expenses of the Virginia PTA/PTSA and the National PTA. Without dues, the many services available through the state and national PTA would be in jeopardy. The state and national portion of dues do not belong to the local unit and are not recorded as income. Prompt payment of dues by December 1st each year enables the Virginia PTA/PTSA and the National PTA to continue service to the local units. The membership dues paid by each member include the state portion, established by the state bylaws, the national portion, established by national bylaws, and the local portion, established by the local unit bylaws. An individual who pays dues to a local unit automatically becomes a member of the state and national PTAs. People belonging to more than one PTA must pay membership dues to each local unit they join. Note: Dues are not tax-deductible. State Portion National Portion Total Paid Per Member/ per local unit $0.75 $1.75 = $2.50 Membership Committee The goal of ALL Virginia PTA Membership Committees is to build an informed, participating membership, familiar with the purpose, policies and programs of the National PTA and the Virginia PTA and to maintain an awareness of the pressing concerns of the school community. You can join PTA any time during the year. It is a year round campaign that does not end after open house or 100% membership or on December 1st when dues are paid to the state PTA. For more information, contact the Virginia PTA/PTSA Membership Committee Chair, membership@vapta.org Visit the National PTA (www.pta.org) web site for detailed Membership Recruitment and Retention information.
