Everyday Math

Everyday Mathematics was adopted as the math program at Woodruff Primary
School because we felt that our students needed a rigorous and balanced math
curriculum. It is a comprehensive program that includes the following areas:

Number and Operations
Geometry
Measurement
Algebraic Functions (Patterns)
Data Analysis and Probability

Everyday Math introduces a great number of skills at each grade level. It
differentiates which skills are beginning skills, developing skills, and
secure skills. The secure skills are the skills that are formally assessed
on the report card.

Everyday Math takes a spiral approach to developing skills. Once students
are introduced to a skill, they will continue to see that type of problem
throughout the year.

KINDERGARTEN SKILLS: (These skills will be assessed on the report card.)

MATHEMATICAL PROCESSES
I use and explain strategies to solve mathematical problems.
I use words (more, less, larger, smaller, wider, narrower, thinner, thicker)
and representations (objects, fingers, drawings) to describe mathematical
ideas.

NUMBER AND OPERATIONS
I can count objects using one-to-one correspondence and tell how many are in
a set.
I can identify numerals 0-10 (in random order).
I can identify numerals 11-31 (in random order).
I can count forward to 20.
I can count backward from 10.
I understand more, fewer, same.

PATTERNS, RELATIONSHIPS, & FUNCTIONS
I sort objects into subgroups, classifying and comparing according to a rule.
I recognize, duplicate, and extend patterns.

GEOMETRY AND SPATIAL RELATIONS
I recognize and describe some characteristics of shapes.
I understand and use direction, location, and position words (near, far, up,
down, below, above, beside, next to, between, over, under).

MEASUREMENT
I order, compare, and describe objects by size (larger/smaller), length
(longer/shorter), capacity (more/less), and weight (heavier/lighter).
I explore and use common instruments (calendar, clock, ruler, scale,
thermometer) for estimating and measuring during work or play.
I can identify a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar.
I can tell time to the hour.

DATA COLLECTION AND PROBABILITY
I collect data and make records using lists or graphs.
