District 8

District 8 of Otsego County is the Town of Otsego.  Most of the Village of Cooperstown is included in District 8, as is the Hamlet of Fly Creek.  Neighborhoods outside Cooperstown and Fly Creek include Toddsville, Oaksville, Fly Creek Valley, the Canadarago Lake district, the Otsego Lake district, Pierstown, Panther Mountain and the corridors along State Routes 28,  80, and 205.  Each of these neighborhoods has special character with which it is identified, as well as special concerns.  The nieghbors in Toddsville, for example, have recently gotten together to save the Lower Toddsville Bridge, one of the historic landmarks that identifies Toddsville as a community.  The nieghbors in the Canadarago Lake district are working with the Soil and Water District, the Otsego County Conservation Association, the Towns of Richfield, Exeter, and Otsego and the County, to repair the Oaks Creek Dam to prevent flooding of the shores of Canadarago Lake.  The neighbors in Pierstown are working with the Otsego Town Board to have an overlay district in Pierstown for zoning purposes.  The character of our neighborhoods and the efforts of our residents are part of what makes the Town of Otsego such a unique and special place to live.

The school districts serving the residents of the Town of Otsego are excellent!  Most of County District 8 is included in the Cooperstown Central School District.  The Canadarago Lake and Panther Mountain areas are included in the Richfield Springs Central School District.  The Route 80 corridor west of route 205 is included in the Edmeston Central School District.

Portions of District 8 are also included in Historic Districts.  The entire Village of Cooperstown is itself an Historic District.  The entire Otsego Lake watershed has been designated as the Glimmerglass Historic District.  It includes the Otsego Lake area and parts of Pierstown.   The hamlet of Fly Creek has been designated an Historic District, as well.  The Pierstown Grange was presented with an Historic Preservation Stewardship Award in 2007 for maintaining the Grange Hall essentially as built in the late 1800s, and for opening the building to as many community events as possible.  Many such awards have been presented to organizations and private citizens throughout the Town since the inception of the awards.

The Town of Otsego Board meets at 7PM on the second Wednesday of the month.  The Town of Otsego Planning Board meets at 7PM on the second Tuesday of the month.  All meetings are held in the Town Office Building on County Highway 26 in Fly Creek.  Coming from Cooperstown on State Highway 28, turn left (south) at the blinking light in Fly Creek.  Bear left at the fork, The Town Office Building will be on your right.
