Eastport, ME

Welcome to Eastport, Maine, the easternmost city in the US, where the sun first rises on America. Eastport is as far north as you can go on the rocky coast of Downeast Maine and still be on the Atlantic. No bigger than village, Eastport is a charming commercial port situated on Moose Island.

This is the famous Eastport Fisherman statue, originally made for a TV show, then given to the city as a gift by the producers. The citizens of Eastport liked the statue so much, they kept it even though it portrays a Pacific salmon rather than an Atlantic salmon!

The fishing wharf and commercial wharfs are along Water Street. They are home to commercial lobster and fishing boats, small commercial shipping vessels, ferries to the US and Canadian Islands, the Coast Guard boats, private pleasure craft, and tour boats. Across the Bay is Canada. The islands are both Canadian and American, including Campobello Island, Summer Home to Franklin Roosevelt.

The commercial wharf is seen here at low tide. Passamaquoddy Bay is part of the greater Bay Of Fundy where the difference between high tide and low tide is extreme. Look how far below the docks these vessels set.

Water Street has many colorful shops, galleries, and resturants and services for visitors and locals. The buildings in the downtown district, as well as most of the homes and churches in Eastport, date back to the 1800s and the turn of the last century

Water Street row storefronts are picturesque and just what you'd expect in a small, New England, maritime city.

This is the main dining room of one of Eastport's commercial, year round lobster fisheries that distribute local lobsters and other seafood to local and distant markets. Individuals can also purchase live lobsters and other seafood in this store, and, during the summer months, have it prepared on premisis for bayside dining.

This intersection is known as Bank Square as most of the buildings at this intersection are or were banks. It's an open public space where people meet. Many celebrations and civic events are held here, including the Pirate Festival, complete with parade, song and dance, dinners and other events. Note the pirate images on the banner.

Water Street is also the address of many of Eastport's municipal buildings, most of which date to the 1800s. Peavey Library has one of the prettiest and well stocked reading rooms around, in addition to public access high speed internet. Bring your laptop for WiFi access, as well.

The US Post Office in Eastport, also built in the 1800s, has been the subject of many old postcards which are widely collected.

Even the Police Station in Eastport is charming. The station house used to be a bank!
