Get to Know Us Vol. 2 Pt.3

This Week's Spotlight Player: Chris Hirdler, base coach

1.)  Chris, how did you get started in the DRS?
A few friends that played for Webster asked if I was interested in playing baseball.  I had not played baseball since eighth grade traveling team.  So it sounded like a good idea.  Webster signed me!

2.) How did the Irish get you on their roster?
After two disappointing seasons with the Sox I was asked my interest in joining the green.  Bjerke and Dunker asked me at Bill’s place while we were grilling.  I did not have to think hard about that move, honestly it felt like I had just signed a professional baseball contract.  It was hard to leave friends.  The winning tradition was hard to pass-up.

3.) Your first game in Green was at Montgomery. Describe what was happening in your head.
WOW!  I can remember that day like it was yesterday.  I put on my Irish 22 uniform and felt like a new man.  I was screaming and shouting to everyone and anyone that would listen on my way to the park.  I would be lying if I said I was not nervous.  I had to have a good game to impress my new teammates.  Thank goodness Billy was pitching and I did not have to field but one groundball because I was in a complete daze.  I finished the game with 2 hits and we WON, which I did not get to celebrate much in years past.

4.) You were the centerpiece in the end of a classic pitching battle between Prior Lake's Jake Schmidt and the Irish's Bill Dunker. Care to share the day's experience?
One of the best classic DRS pitching match-ups I have ever been involved in.  Jake is a great pitcher and had gotten me out my previous at bats.  In the bottom of the tenth inning I was looking first pitch fastball.  He threw me a cookie and I gave it my best swing.  I thought I had gotten enough of it and started trotting towards first (not in a show boating technique) I just wanted to watch this moment.  When the ball hit the top half of the fence I had just reached first base and needed to turn on the burners to get to second.  My first reaction was OH CRAP and then all I could think about was Bjerke ringing my neck if I did not get to second base.  When I scored the winning run, it felt amazing.  I had never felt the emotions that were going through my body at time.  This is one moment in my career that I will never forget.  Billy pitched an absolutely awesome game and I loved playing left fielder for him.

5.) What's your favorite Irish memory?
I have more memories as a coach then I do as a player.  I only played in 10 games before my accident.  I would not know where to start.  The guys that are on this team are amazing.  I was truly blessed to have landed on a team with a bunch of guys like the ones we have on the Irish.  I’ll never forget 2005 Regional and qualifying for the State Tournament and Bill, along with the team, giving me the game ball.  What a truly honoring experience.

6.) Not to be a downer, but Thursday night was the 4 year anniversary of your accident. You have come a long way since that night and we're proud of you. What lies ahead? Are you still trying to get back on the field?
Well I’m getting married on June 27th to Amanda Strop.  As far as baseball goes, it’s hard to say this, but my playing days are over.  My body just has not healed from my broken neck.  I miss baseball dearly, but I’m alive! I still come to the park and enjoy every game.  I sort of dig my first base coach role.

7.) What is your pre-game ritual?
Not much of a pre-game ritual.  I get dressed like any other player.  Putting on the uniform still give me goose bumps.

8.) What plays on the radio on the way to games?
Whatever’s on the radio!  I enjoy music that gets me pumped up.

9.) Describe your first trip to the state tournament.
2005 in New Richland!  I remember Todd Pexa running onto the field with champagne and spraying it everywhere.  At that point I still had my neck brace on and cane.  I was covered in fluids and it was awesome!  It was an experience many players do not get to experience.  As I stated in an earlier question, Bill handed me the game ball and I was honored.  The ride home with Johnny, Jeff, Pexa, Amanda and I was memorable.

10.) In your playing days, were there pitchers or teams you dreaded seeing?
Bill Dunker (1 for 5 with 4 ground outs to the pitcher), Brian Muell, and Steve Weiers- Pitchers. I really did not dread seeing a team.

11.) Anything you want to add?
I have a lot of great memories from the Irish.  A great organization with a fabulous fan base.  I felt welcome from day one.  Thank you Irish teammates, Irish fans, and other DRS players for the support throughout some tough years.

Thanks, Chris. Keep it up!!
