From Bob Strom: (2008 but still relevant)
Great news! A single loon chick hatched and left the nest on June 25th.
Unfortunately this coincides with the busiest time on our lake. While loons
are capable of adapting to a variety of conditions they will be very
vulnerable the next few week while they are caring for the chick.
Chicks are not waterproof. They need to be able to climb on their parents'
backs to stay warm and dry. If the parents are disturbed they may leave
their chicks.
Young chicks can not dive. They can not get out of the way.
Chicks tire easily. The presence of watercraft causes chicks to keep
swimming preventing them from feeding and resting.
Parents move chicks to open water to avoid natural predators. They are
difficult to see.
Please be aware of the loons. Check them out before going full throttle.
Listen to the loons. If you approach a loon and it starts to call you are
too close. Please move away.
Watch the loons. If you see a loon "dancing" or beating the water with its
wings you are too close. Please move away.
Most of all please enjoy our loons. They help make Bass Lake a great place
to be.
