All Purpose Pages' Update Page Instructions

  1. The most recent Java update (Version 6.1) may result in issues with the Update section of the All Purpose page.  If updates to the page fail to display correctly in the All Purpose Update page, please go to your Update Index and click the Re-Generate Web button.  This will implement our fix for this issue.
  2. To update the "All Purpose" page type requires Java JDK 1.4 or higher which you can easily get for free by going to http://www.java.com and clicking the "Download Now" button. The update page will work on Windows (IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, FireFox, etc.), on Mac OS X 10.3.x with JDK 1.4.2 (Safari 1.2, FireFox 1.5), on Linux (Netscape, Mozilla, FireFox, Konqueror, Galeon, Opera), on Solaris (Netscape, Mozilla, FireFox, Konqueror, Opera) and on Sun JavaDesktop System (Netscape, Mozilla, FireFox, Konqueror, Galeon, Opera).
All browsers can view the All Purpose pages. Java Runtime is required, but that comes with all systems.
  3. PERFORMANCE: Initially, display of an Update All Purpose page will be slow for the first access in an Internet session with an "older"/"slower" machine. Performance will increase exponentially with faster machines. Also, if it takes a long time for the update window to appear and you are using (or have access to) a PC with Internet Explorer, see below:
    • Note: This point on performance does NOT deal with the time it takes to submit your update.
    • Go to the Java Control Panel. Right click the Java coffee cup icon in the tray at the bottom right of your screen and select Java Control Panel.
    • At the Java Control Panel, select the "Advanced" tab
    • Click the + to the left of "Applet Tag Support" to expand that entry and then uncheck the Internet Explorer box and click OK. The next time you use the upload control, it may still be somewhat slow, but after that dramatic improvement should occur.

  4. MAC USERS: For functions like Paste, please use the menu options or tool bar icons. (You will see that the keyboard shortcuts for functions like Paste are different than the standard Mac shortcuts. Java uses Ctrl-V for paste rather than the standard Apple key-V, etc.)
  5. GRAPHICS: You can use the Insert Picture menu item or tool bar icon to include graphics/photos/images in your update. However, your graphics files need to be uploaded using your Update Index page's Add Photos/Docs button.
When you are asked for a URL, you can reference graphics by choosing one of the following methods:
    • Enter the fully qualified web address of the file (i.e. http://worknotes.com/AK/Appleton/Applebee/filename.jpg). If you enter the file name only (without the fully qualified address), the graphic may appear as a broken link inside the All Purpose control.
    • Choose items from our Graphics Library by a direct reference to the filename (i.e. http://worknotes.com/images/filename.jpg).
    • Enter the fully qualifed web address of any graphic on the Internet (i.e. http://www.somewhere.com/filename.jpg).
Once you have added a graphic successfully so that it displays in the update window, you can click on it and then resize it by dragging the handles on the sides and corners of the graphic.
You can make the graphic be an active link by right clicking on it and, in the resulting dialog box, entering the URL of where you would like it to link to.
  6. MENU OPTIONS: The menu options and toolbar icons are similar to those used in word processors and other formatting programs. If you hold the mouse cursor over a tool bar item, its function will be displayed.
  7. TABLES: When you create a table using the menu or toolbar icons, you will see the borders of the cells. However, for those borders to be visible in the View page, you will need to define a border width using the Table menu option and selecting the Properties sub-option or using the Table Properties icon on the right hand side of the tool bar. Click on the table to activate any of the Table menu options or icons such as for inserting a row or column.
  8. HYPERLINKS: If you type in a web address or email address followed by a blank, the address will be automatically turned into a live hyperlink. You can also turn any text string, or graphic, into a hyperlink by selecting the string, or graphic, and choosing the Insert Hyperlink menu option or icon. (If you choose the Insert Hyperlink menu option or icon and are linking to a web address outside of your web you must include the full web address including the "http://" - if you want to link to a web page in your web, you need only include the last part of the web address (e.g., h0.stm, ap5.stm))
  9. HTML: Under the update area is a tab that allows you to see and edit the underlying HTML. Do not edit the html, head, or body tags themselves. You're on your own when editing HTML - please do not contact Support regarding problems you create when editing HTML.
  10. UPDATE: When you've finished entering and formatting text, etc., go to the bottom of the page and enter your password and Submit - just like for any other page.
  11. VIEW: When viewing a View page, you may have to click on your browser's Reload/Refresh button to see changes you've just done.
