The following is a step by step explanation of the
process I went through in creating the pastel,
   Daisy Jane:

I started by drawing the major shapes using a
charcoal pencil on sand colored Sennelier LaCarte
   pastel paper.

Second, I began to lay in pastel, working on much of
the dark background first.  I don't always work this
way, but I decided it would be best because I didn't
want to contaminate the yellow center of the flower
   with darker colors.

Third, I tackled the center of the daisy, keeping in
mind which direction the sunlight was coming from
and how that affected the lights and darks within
   the center.

Next I added each petal around the center including
the cute little curled petal, my favorite.

I kept in mind the uniqueness of each petal, being
careful not to render any two the same.  I find painting
a flower to be a lot like painting a portrait--each 'face'
is unique and beautiful in its own way.

   More petals......

.....and more petals.  I kept adjusting the lights
and shadows on the petals' edges so that there
was variety as well as believability in the layering
   of petals.

Finally, it was just a matter of adding darks to the
lower right corner and....Ta-da!  The finished
   piece.
