Hello, my name is Christina Chapan and I am married and forty-two years
old. I am a special education teacher and I work with children with mental
and emotional challenges. About eight years ago, I was getting discouraged
by following a typical
fat free diet. I had lost a substantial amount of weight five years ago but
I was slowly gaining the weight back from before and losing energy. It just
seemed like I was tired and down all the time. I exercised everyday but I
did not have an organized plan of cardio and weight training. I also felt I
had little direction in many areas of my life. My youth pastor told me
about BFL and I knew immediately I needed a change and that this would make
a difference in my life. In my first challenge, I lost nine pounds, eight
inches in the waist, and five inches in the hips.
The second challenge I lost two more inches in the waist, two pounds in
the hips and in challenge 3, I continued to tone. Fellow teachers who had
not seen me since the spring really noticed a difference when I returned to
school in the fall.
Four days before my first BFL anniversary or the end of Challenge 4, I
had an auto accident and I totaled my car. It was a no-fault accident and
thankfully, no one was hurt. I know that with the help of God and my focus
I learned during this year of BFL helped me go through that difficult time.
My waist is now 26 inches, hips 35, thighs upper 16 and lower thighs 10
and I have lost twenty -five pounds in the past four years. My body fat has
gone from 40% to 20%. It really feels good to go shopping for clothes again
and put away the old clothes, which do not fit anymore.
As a teacher, I think my desire for eating right has transferred to my
many of my students to make good lifestyle changes. One day I had a taco
and nachos at lunch (which I only took a few bites out of because they were
so bad) and my kids really gave me a hard time about eating junk food after
I had preached to them good healthy eating habits. Opportunities have come
at my school and church to teach fitness to both young and old.
My greatest compliment came from one of my teenagers at church saying I
still looked good for an old person. Last summer in summer school one of
the teacher assistants noted that my class had so much fun and that we were
always doing cool things. She was fifteen years younger than I was. She
also commented on my energy level. I have four certifications as a CPT and
from ACE, AFA, SCW and ISSA and I train elementary students at my
school, church and the local recreational center. My articles on children’s
fitness have been published in 31 various print and internet sites.
Having a belief in Jesus, doing BFL and having a healthy lifestyle have
changed me in many areas. I have changed careers over the past year from
elementary to special education, overcome fears that I have held since
childhood, and been an example to both children and adults I meet. I also
love to run and am training seventh half marathon. Last year I ran the
Chicago Marathon.
If I can be an example to the youth and children I meet, I feel I have
made a difference. And that is what drives me everyday as a teacher and
trainer.
