Let the Games Begin!

It may be a year until the next Olympic games, but the fever continues on .  
This is a set of games that can be played in a classroom gym, or outside.  
It involves fun with little unhealthy competition.  Let the games begin!


Balloon Ball Throw

Materials:

Balloon or ball

Masking tape

Ruler

Stand on the tape line on the floor.  Throw one balloon or ball as far as 
you can.  Measure the distance with a ruler the distance your balloon or 
ball traveled with a ruler.


Hip Hop High 

Materials: 

Masking tape

Ruler
 

Stand next to a wall.  Stretch out your arm upward, while keeping both feet 
flat on the ground.  Mark the highest point you can reach with a piece of 
masking tape at which point you can reach.  Jump as high as you can and make 
another masking tape mark on the wall.  Measure the distance between the two 
tape marks.


Wide Width

Materials: 

Masking tape

Ruler
 


Stand with both feet together. Place one foot on a starting tape mark.   
Take a giant step with one foot to the side.   Mark the inside spot where 
your stepping foot lands.   Measure the width of your step.

Lengthy Long Jump

Materials: 

Masking tape

Ruler


Put both feet on the starting line on the floor.  Take one giant step with 
both feet forward.  Mark the length of your giant step.  

Frisbee Fro

Materials: 

Masking tape

Ruler

Frisbee or paper plate

Throw a Frisbee or paper plate from a marked line.  Find the distance that 
the Frisbee or paper plate traveled with a ruler.  Try to see what happens 
when you close your eyes.  Compare the distances with the eye open and 
closed with one another.

Pool Doodles

Throw a section of a pool noodle as far as you can using  an overhead 
motion.  Find the distance where you threw the noodle and the ending point 
that the noodle landed.


Stomper Cloppers

Materials:

Stompers

Tape

Cone

Take two sturdy cups and add string to them.  Have two students stand on top 
of them and walk back and forth from one point to another and back.  The 
player that finishes first wins.

Hippity Hop Hooray!

Materials:

Tape

Corners

 Hippity Hops

Take two Hippity hops and race  two people from one point to another and see 
which person comes back first.  The first one back wins!


Baton Battle

Materials:

Tape

Cones

Batons

Take two batons and have students race from one point to another and back.  
The team that comes back first with the baton wins! Try various movements 
that do not involve running, such as hopping, tiptoeing, jumping, and 
skipping.


Spoon Spectacular

Materials:

Two spoons

Two balls

Two cones

Masking tape

Students will get into two equal lines. The first person in each line will 
receive a spoon and a ball. The ball is placed in the spoon, and the first 
person runs down and around the cone. When he/ she returns to the line, they 
will give it to the next person who will do the same thing. If the ball is 
dropped, the student must stop, and place the ball back on the spoon before 
continuing.  The student who comes back with the spoon and ball intact wins.

Materials:

Two spoons 

Two balls

Two cones

Masking tape 

Hockey Hotspot 

Materials:

Two Hockey Sticks

Two cones

Bag of lightweight balls

Students line up in two teams with the first person from each team standing 
on a designated starting place. Give these two students a hockey stick and a 
ball. On the signal to begin, these students will use the hockey stick to 
move the ball around the cone, and back to the start. Then they will hand 
their hockey stick to the next player in line. This will continue until all 
team members have had a turn.   The team that finishes first wins!

Light your World

Materials:

Masking Tape

Pool Noodles

Students line up in two teams with the first person from each team standing 
inside a starting hoop. Give these two students a pool noodle. On the signal 
to begin, the two students will run to the cone and run back. They will hand 
the torch noodle to the next student in line, who will then run to the cone 
and back. This will continue until all team members have had a turn.
