The Post Advisor

The Explorer post is supervised by the Post Advisor. As our advisor, I am
responsible for the operation of the post, including developing the training
schedule, preparing lesson plans, and teaching each training class. My name
is Craig Sawyer and I am a Sergeant with the Fairhope Police Department. I
have worked here since 1998. I am currently assigned as our agency's
assistant administrator, but like most officers working for small agencies, I
have multiple roles. In addition to my work load as an administrator, I am
also the Evidence/Property Manager, Press Information Officer, I register and
track criminal sex offenders in our jurisdiction, and I assist with various
training needs. I supervise the department's field training program as
well. The Explorer Post is a recent addition to our department and I am
finding it to be very challenging. Prior to my time with Fairhope P.D., I
was a police officer in San Jose, CA for 6 years and a policeman in the
military for 5. In all, I have gained a lot of valuable experience that I am
hoping to pass on to our Explorers.

Goals & Objectives

The Explorer program is designed to offer young men and women valuable
insight into the daily life of a police officer. It is primarily geared
towards young people who hope to one day become law enforcement officers.
Our members have expressed interest in a career with local police
departments, state police agencies, and federal agencies including the
F.B.I., Secret Service, U.S. Marshalls, A.T.F., Customs, and more.
Also, some members joined with the goal of learning skills that would serve
them in a military career.
